Checklist for Buying Lights from Overseas Vendors
13th Jan 2016
Zest Lighting is an Australian owned and based lighting store that is absolutely committed to only serving Australian customers with high quality designer lighting at the most competitive prices available.
However, we often get the odd Australian customer who says that they can get a better price on designer lighting from overseas vendors such as Ali Baba express and international Ebay sellers based in countries like China and India. We understand that price is a big factor in purchasing lights and we always endeavour to help our customers to find quality lighting at competitive prices. But, we stress that there are some other factors that also needs to be considered before you purchase a light from an international seller.
To avoid disappointment, we will do our best to inform you and give you advice on what you should consider before you choose to buy from overseas
Warranty
Always ask if the company offers warranty. Usually they don’t but in cases where they do, then find out what exactly is the process for getting a replacement and/or repair.
Returns
Do they have a returns policy in place? What will happen if you change your mind after seeing the product?
Most likely they will not offer returns. And if they do have a returns policy, then make sure you are not forced to send the product all the way back to the seller for them to inspect and issue a refund. Often times, sending the product back will be more costly than the actual light. And, who will hold them accountable?
Australian Electrical Standards
Do they meet Australian electrical standards? Protect yourself and your family; always ask for proof that the product meets Australian electrical standards
Delivery Time
How long do you have to wait to receive the light?
It usually takes weeks for the light to arrive to your door step. What happens if it arrives damaged (very likely event as the item goes through many hands to finally get to you)? You will have to wait another couple of weeks for a replacement. It can end up taking months to fit out your space.
Customer Service and Communication
Can they speak English well and offer you advice, information and service in a timely manner? Do they have Australian opening hours?
Some do, some don’t. Just make sure that you are always getting the right advice and service
In comparison to overseas vendors from markets like ali baba and ebay, Australian lighting retailers offer you the following:
- Warranty and quick replacement/ repair
- Seamless and transparent returns, refunds and exchange policy
- Lighting that meets Australian electrical standard
- Quick delivery time
- Great customer service
You make the choice but always remember the old phrase – you get what you pay for
