Art Deco Wall Lights
If you’re looking for a streamlined wall light full of geometric patterns and a futuristic appeal, then Art Deco wall lights are your top match.
These lights follow the trendy style of the 1920s and 1930s, the period of calm between the two world wars. The design for Art Deco wall lights is inspired by the recollection of the machine age and classical art. Hence, many of these wall lights have simplified shapes in their designs and are made from a wide range of materials, from deluxe ivory and crystal to durable polished steel and brass.
Zest Lighting presents our collection of Art Deco wall lights that can unleash your love for the past in the comforts of your abodes. Find the colour, material, and type of Art Deco wall light that matches your personality and taste for a complete and satisfying lighting makeover.
THE SCHOOLS OF THOUGHT UNDER THE ART DECO STYLE
The Art Deco style in architecture, design, and lighting emerged in France during the early 1920s, evolving from the Art Nouveau movement. It gained international popularity after the Exposition Internationale des Arts Décoratifs et Modernes in Paris, where its bold and luxurious aesthetics captivated the public. Art Deco remained dominant in design until the 1940s when it was gradually replaced by the Mid-Century Modern style.
Two schools of thought shaped the Art Deco movement, each with a distinct approach to design and materials.
The traditionalists, led by the French organisation Société des Artistes Décorateurs, viewed Art Deco as a statement of opulence and a rejection of the austerity brought by World War I. Their designs featured expensive materials such as crystal, ivory, and silver, often with geometric motifs and intricate detailing.
On the other hand, the modernists embraced technological advancements, favouring mass production over handcrafted luxury. They used more affordable and durable materials, making Art Deco accessible to a broader audience. Their approach became more popular after the 1929 Great Depression, as economic constraints led to a preference for practicality over extravagance.
Art Deco's influence waned with the onset of World War II but saw a revival in the 1960s when its bold designs were reinterpreted for a new era.
PATTERNS TO LOOK FOR IN ART DECO WALL LIGHTS
Whether inspired by traditionalist or modernist Art Deco influences, the defining characteristics of Art Deco lighting remain consistent:
- Simplified Geometric Shapes: Circles, rectangles, and tiered structures are prominent in Art Deco lighting, creating a sleek and structured appearance.
- Recurring Patterns: Popular motifs include chevrons, zigzags, and latticework, reflecting the era’s emphasis on symmetry and bold visual repetition.
- Vertical Forms: Many Art Deco wall lights feature elongated or tiered designs, reinforcing the movement’s fascination with height and grandeur.
