Art Deco Wall Lights
If you’re looking for a streamlined wall light full of geometric patterns and a futuristic appeal, then Art Deco wall lights are your top match.
These lights follow the trendy style of the 1920s and 1930s, the period of calm between the two world wars. The design for Art Deco wall lights is inspired by the recollection of the machine age and classical art. Hence, many of these wall lights have simplified shapes in their designs and are made from a wide range of materials, from deluxe ivory and crystal to durable polished steel and brass.
Zest Lighting presents our collection of Art Deco wall lights that can unleash your love for the past in the comforts of your abodes. Find the colour, material, and type of Art Deco wall light that matches your personality and taste for a complete and satisfying lighting makeover.
The Schools of Thought Under the Art Deco Style
The Art Deco style in architecture, design, and lighting started in France during the early 1920s or late 1910s as a new idea emerging from the then-popular Art Nouveau Movement. It became a popular aesthetic internationally after the success of the Paris exhibition entitled Exposition Internationale des Arts Decoratifs Industriels et Modernes. Different works of art attributed to this new style appealed to the public's taste. Its dominance in art and design continued until the 1940s when it was replaced by a new modern art style popularly known as Mid Century.
Two schools of thought coexisted under its banner during its tenure as the most popular design aesthetic.
The traditionalists, spearheaded by the French organisation Société des Artistes Décorateurs, see the Art Deco style as a tool to express their dissatisfaction with the austerity imposed by the first world war. Hence, many of their designs use expensive materials such as crystals, ivories, and silver, to create purely-decorative products with geometric shapes and recurring patterns as the central motif.
The other team, collectively named modernists, sees the Art Deco style as the image of technological advancements, pursuing mass production over handmade crafts and using cheaper, durable materials over costly products with luxurious appeal. The public further embraced their ideas when the 1929 Great Depression affected many communities in America and Europe.
The people's appreciation of the Art Deco style waned with the emergence of the second world war. It disappeared from the public's eye until the 1960s when a new concept of the Art Deco style was celebrated by the masses.
Patterns to Look For in Art Deco Wall Lights
Even though some features of the Art Deco lighting vary depending on which school it follows, the core visual cues of this aesthetic remain unchanged:
- Simplified Geometric Shapes: The Rail 4 Light Matte Brass Opal Glass Wall Light and the Multi Rectangle Black Opal Modern Wall Light perfectly exemplifies this aspect of Art Deco lighting. Basic shapes such as circles and rectangles are ever-present in lights under this style.
- Recurring Designs: The most popular design decorations used in Art Deco wall lights are Chevron and zigzag patterns. However, lights decorated with lattice and chain motifs are also warmly welcomed by many Art Deco lighting collectors. In our collection, the Hermine Cylindrical Matt Brass Moroccan Wall Light and the Butterworth Half Round Glass Wall Light are notable examples of those wall lights with recurring designs.
- Vertical Forms: Whether they are tiered or simply look elongated, Art Deco wall lights are iconic for their long contours and structure. Sample products include the Replica Alouette 1 Light Brass Wall Sconce and the Replica Alouette 2 Light Brass Wall Sconce.
