CRYSTAL CHANDELIERS

The main factor that differentiates all crystals is the percentage of lead oxide that is added into the crystal composition. The higher the percentage of lead oxide in the glass the greater the density and therefore the more vibrant the colours are reflected and refracted from it.

Crystals generally fall into 4 main categories:

Acrylic or glass = 0%

Fine Crystal = 5 to 10%

Lead Crystal = 10 to 24%

Full Lead Crystal = >24%

TYPES OF CRYSTALS USED IN CHANDELIERS

There are 6 main types of crystals available today that make up crystal chandeliers. We have listed them below in order of quality and cost:

Swarovski Elements Crystal Glass: The finest crystal in the world manufactured by Swarovski. It is generally machine cut and then machine polished to achieve perfect optic clarity, razor sharp faceting and unique purity and brilliance. The best you can get. Unfortunately, we don't offer this as it is far out of most customers budgets. Crystal composition is more than 32%.

Egyptian / Asfour Crystal (Gemcut): Gemcut crystal is first quality, machine cut crystal glass of a clarity and flawlessness characterized by a prismatic brilliance, visual purity, sharp faceting and precise polishing all its own. We offer this type of crystal through our Luxuria Chandeliers. Crystal composition is about 30%.

Turkish Crystal (Handcut): Labour intensive and ancient process - crystal is first cut by hand in two stages on iron and then sandstone grinding wheels. Limited availability.

Italian Crystal: Venetian crystal is moulded and fire-polished rather than hand or machine cut, resulting in a beautifully subtle luminosity. Not too expensive compared to the previous crystals.

K9 and Chinese Crystal: Mass produced, this crystal type offers a wonderful look at a modest price. It is cut and polished like more expensive grades, and has a high optic quality with precision facets. A good bet for consumers looking for high value and more for less. We mainly offer this crystal and frankly, it's all that you need.

CRYSTAL CHANDELIER SHAPES

Crystal chandeliers come in a variety of shapes and sizes including but not limited to: crystal ball, cascading, candelabra, empire, multi-tiered, orb, round ball, and many others.

WHERE TO HANG A CRYSTAL CHANDELIER?

Although most homes hang a crystal chandelier in the dining room or void, there are a number of other places where you can hang these decorative lighting.

Bedrooms: Hanging a crystal chandelier in the centre or corner of a bedroom can enhance the look of the room. The lighting fixture can add an elegant appeal to the area.

Any room with a lot of natural light: Natural light will reflect in a resplendent fashion off the crystals of the chandelier. This will greatly add to the charm and beauty of the room. Consider buying a chandelier with many crystals, preferably in different shapes. This will enhance the ambiance of the room by reflecting different light prisms around the room.
