Security Lighting
Homeowners often wonder why they should invest in outdoor security lighting and what benefits would they get out of it. Outdoor security lighting is a necessity for every home. One major advantage to installing security lights is for safety and security reasons. Dark areas surrounding your home are an invitation for any kind of vandalism and burglary. Most burglaries happen at night and one thing that you can easily do to discourage burglars to target your home is to provide adequate lighting at night.
Installing security lighting around your home is a worthwhile investment. If you are looking for a way to protect your family, outdoor security lighting may be the solution you need.
At Zest lighting, Security Lights are available in an extensive array of designs and finishes that are aesthetically and functionally pleasing to match your home style and security needs.

How to Choose the Best Outdoor Security Lights: Size, Finishes, Styles, and Installation Options
- Purpose/Why: Security lighting is so beneficial because it does not only enhance your outdoor entertaining, but it also serves as a deterrent to unwanted visitors. These types of lights help to illuminate your driveways, backyards, pathways, steps, porches and around the rest of your home eliminating the possibilities of injuries for you and your loved ones.
- Size: Depending on where you would like to place your security lights, you may opt for smaller lights when you need to cover narrow spaces in your home. Small security lights can go around windows and doors and create a better lighting setup to give you extra control over how well your lighting experience works. You may also align smaller security lights along the sides of a sidewalk or driveway among other spaces.
- Positioning: When planning your security lighting system, survey your home perimeter to identify any potential safety and security risks. Keep your lights about 10 to 20 feet apart from each other to ensure enough coverage around your home while keeping a space from being too bright or too dark. It is recommended to install security lights at the entrances and exits to your home, this includes the main door, side doors, back door, garden or patio entrances.
- Colours: Look for security lights that will complement the existing colour palette of your outdoor designs. We have security lights available in a variety of colours including but not limited to black, white, grey, and chrome. You may choose different styles of light fixtures in the same finish for a cohesive design.
- Brightness: Contrary to popular belief, brighter isn’t necessarily better. Very bright lights tend to create contrasting areas of dark shadows. Opt for a security light that will adequately light up the area without plunging the rest into pitch blackness. Choose a fixture that is bright enough to ward off intruders without casting a deep shadow. At the same time, it won’t create so much glare when your welcomed guests approach your front door.
- Installation: It is always recommended to consult an experienced electrician in installing your security lights. They should be able to plan and advise you on the best location for your outdoor security lights. Some of the factors to consider in installation are the following:
-
Height: Since some security lights are equipped with motion sensors that have a limit of 25’ for them to operate, you don’t want to push that limit too aggressively. When installing outdoor security lights, it is recommended that the fixture be placed at a minimum height of 8-12’ and a maximum height of about 20’. This is a safe range for your motion sensor to still work and at the same time prevents criminals from tampering with the system.
-
Bulb: Security lights are most effective when correct-wattage bulbs are paired with covers that direct light to a specific area and reduce blinding glare. Choose a wattage high enough to illuminate the desired area without casting too harsh a contrast between the lit area and the darkness beyond.
-
Style/Feel: If the security light fixtures will also be part of the appearance of your home, they should be made in a style that complements the style of the home.
- Materials: Outdoor security lights are normally placed on an exposed exterior wall, under the roof such as porch lights or in any other unprotected area, such as in your yard or next to outside stairs. When choosing an outdoor fixture, consider luminaires that are made to tolerate dampness and/or features weatherproof designs and finishes capable of withstanding the elements such as humidity, rain, and snow.
- Maintenance: Once you have designed and installed outdoor security lights, it is equally important to maintain the light fixtures to ensure safety and security. Security lights should be cleaned at least twice a year or whenever necessary to ensure their best performance. You may clean dirty lenses with a soft cloth and mild soap, remove signs of vandalism and trim tree branches to prevent light obstruction.
