Stair Wall Lights
Due to its often narrow space and fast traffic flow, staircases and stair areas are usually less glamorous or decorated than other locations in homes and offices. Nonetheless, it's crucial to ensure that these places remain well lit when used to prevent accidents from happening.

Wall Lighting for Each Stair Type
When asked what types of wall lights can be added to the stairs, the most common answers would be step lights and strip lights regardless of the stair type. However, with a bit of imagination, you can add various other wall lighting types to your stairs area and make it look fabulous. Here are some stair types generally used and our recommendations for practical and decorative wall lighting:
- Straight Stairs: The most common form of stairs for residential and commercial low-rise properties, both in the countryside and metro cities. In accordance with the building regulations, some have a central landing or platform to break up the flight halfway. Recessed wall lighting and mini wall sconces with little to no protruding parts are typical options when you want to add some decorative and functional illuminators on the walls of your straight stairs.
- Quarter Turn / L-Shaped Stairs: A variation of straight stairs. It has a bend in some portion of its design, often called a landing point or platform. Many use this landing point as a place to rest or pause, which is why many homeowners install candle wall sconces or uplight flush-mounted wall lights on the walls around this platform.
- Switchback / U-Shaped Stairs: Switchback stairs are often seen in high-rise buildings, such as condominiums, hotels, and corporate properties. It usually has many landing points or resting platforms, where one can install corner wall sconces or wallchieres.
- Curved Stairs: With their helical arc structures, these stairs introduce a sense of elegance and finesse in space. For a final touch, see if crystal wall lights or art deco wall lights can upgrade the area’s appeal.
- Circular / Spiral Stairs: Many spiral stairs have no walls, only railings, due to their curved form. Hence, to beautify the stairs area, many use pendant lights and chandeliers instead of wall lights. However, if your spiral stairs have a wall enclosing them, you can install torch wall lights in distinct places for a medieval age or classic appeal.
- Winder Stairs: A variation of L-shaped stairs. However, instead of a flat square or rectangular landing point, winder stairs have triangular or irregular shaped steps as their changing point. Since the surface space is small, it’s not often used as a resting place. Instead, this changing point is advocated as a design feature, making a seamless transition between two distinct stair parts. To accompany this architectural element, why not place multiple up and down wall lights in planned positions and create a visually striking play of light on the winder stairs’ walls?
- Cantilever / Floating Stairs: Cantilever stairs are popular options for modern contemporary home construction. As a whole, it’s both a design and architectural feature. Hence, it’s not a stretch to say that replica wall lights are among the few wall lighting options that can improve its overall charm.
- Bifurcated / Split Stairs: Bifurcated stairs have a single opening at the bottom part and an elevated landing point, splitting the stair path at two opposite ends. These stairs are commonly seen on high-end old mansions or grand hotel lobbies. We suggest you use modern wall lights in sets of two and install them on each wall part of the split stairs.
