Modern Pendant Lights
Modern and contemporary pendant lighting are an attractive alternative to plain, traditional light fixtures and illumination. They are now available in shapes and sizes that were not possible before thanks to cutting-edge LED technology.
Modern pendants offer unmatched diversity ranging from understated single pendant versions as well as multi-light pendants. Modern pendant lighting brings in an elegant finish to any room. Not only do they make an attractive centrepiece, but they can also add a modern designer look to any room you'd like.
As opposed to classic fixtures that lie flush against the ceiling and uniformly light a room, modern pendant lights hang from the ceiling by cable, wire, stem, or chain, and offer a stylish and highly customisable way to brighten up a whole room or direct light to a specific area or feature within a room.
Zest Lighting is your go-to source for modern and contemporary pendant lighting online. Our wide selection of pendant lighting spans the modern design spectrum with offerings from the modern and contemporary brands you know and love – from whimsical and fun styles to those with clean lines.
Regardless of your décor style, you can find a modern or contemporary pendant that suits your space.
MODERN PENDANT LIGHTS
Modern pendant lighting comes in different shapes for a specific style. For example industrial look, cylinder or tubular shape in single and cluster pendants are popular in Australia homes. Metal and concrete materials are most common for this design. Drum or dome-shaped pendant lights are one of the modern shade styles that people choose a lot if they want a strong and steady illumination in their dining or living room.
MODERN VS CONTEMPORARY DESIGN
Many think that modern and contemporary designs are the same and are used as synonyms when describing many things. However, the reality is that technically there's a world of difference between modern and contemporary in design. We prefer to use them as synonyms due to our customers understanding of the words, but we will like to take the opportunity here to explain the difference between the terms before moving on to contemporary lighting styles.
In short, modern design refers to an era that has passed, while contemporary design is all about the now and the future. The most popular modern design era is the mid-century modern era of the 1950s and 1960s. Think - the modern art movement of the 20th century, informed by Scandinavian and German Bauhaus design. The distinct style focused on simple form and function, which are valued as equals under this style.
Unlike modern design, contemporary design doesn't refer to a specific period of time—it's constantly evolving to reflect the popular styles of present day design. It borrows qualities from modernism, minimalism, Art Deco, and other global styles, without hyper-focusing on any one in particular.
TIPS FOR BUYING CONTEMPORARY & MODERN PENDANT LIGHTS
Make sure you look at features like accessory availability, warranty and ease of installation when you pick a pendant light. It is best to consult a lighting expert to assess things like positioning, assembly and installation of contemporary hanging lights in your modern space. When you order a pendant light online, it might need to be assembled - for example, our ultra modern Replica Modo Chandeliers need assembly. While most modern fixtures are easy to assemble and install, it is recommended that you hire a professional electrician to do this.
Ask your electrician or interior designer professional for advice on what type of modern pendant light or chandelier would suit the interior space that you are working in - while this would largely depend on the purpose of the lights and the dimensions of your unique indoor space, there are some thumb rules that you must follow:
Purpose: Do you need something stylish or functional? Why choose when most modern pendant lights offer both stylish and functionality. All you have to think of now is to get the next few considerations right.
Size: Know the square footage of the room as well as the ceiling height (including vaulted and sloped ceilings) to help you make the best choice. Be mindful of all sizing dimensions including width, depth, and height of a fixture you are interested in. Size makes a big difference in not only the lighting of a room but also its aesthetic.
Positioning: Knowing the right placement or positioning of pendant lighting is important. If it's in the wrong spot, it can be a hassle. But when it's placed in the right spot, it adds a touch of harmony to the entire room. As with size of the fixture, consider the effect on your interior design, general lighting of the room as well as the balance of the design.
Colours: Look for pendant lights that will complement your existing colour palette. We have pendant lights available in a variety of colours including but not limited to black, white, grey, brass, gold, natural, and copper. More modern fittings like to make use of bold and impactful colours like brass, chrome and gold. A common colour configuration for modern homes is mixing black or white with something bold like brass or chrome.
Brightness: The ideal lumen count for ambient lighting in a a room is determined by the space’s square footage. Per 10 square metres, a room needs about 250-400 total lumens.
Light Colour: The colour temperature of lights is another aspect of lighting that you would need to consider. You have 3 main options which is cool white, warm white and neutral white. Cool white is considered to be the more modern choice for modern homes while warm white is suitable for modern ambient bars.
Lighting Function:
- Uplight Lighting: upwards lighting, providing reflected ambiance around a space, rather than direct downlighting
- Downlight Lighting: Ideal when your room needs lots of direct, focused light as well as ambient light. Most common use
- Ambient Lighting: Diffused non direct lighting
Installation Height: Consider how height affects style, safety and illumination. Also, consider ease of installation and its maintenance. For example, if you plan to install in high ceilings, be sure you have all the necessary equipment and items before hiring an electrician. An electrician may have to hire scaffolding so it is highly advised that you check that all items are in working order and ready for installation before hiring a scaffold.
